Alvin’s volleyball season opener quickly turned into a blowout, as the Lady Yellowjackets routed Texas City by 25-8, 25-9 and 25-7 scores, Aug. 9 at the AHS Competition Gym.
While the Lady Stings scored both the season and match’s initial tally, Alvin totally dominated play the rest of the way behind the hitting of juniors Ana Garza and Wylie Singleton and senior Mackenzie Strban.
Garza and Strban both hammered nine kills, while junior Korrigan Wright dished out 22 assists and senior Aubry Anderson provided four aces.
The Lady Yellowjackets then won five of its six matches last weekend at the Pasadena ISD Tournament to capture the tourney title.
Alvin posted victories over Humble (25-12, 25-8) and Northbrook (25-6, 25-10), while falling to Pasadena Memorial (25-23, 22-25, 12) on Aug. 11. However, the Lady Jackets regrouped Saturday to top Galveston Ball (25-12, 25-14) and Foster (25-19, 25-22) to advance to the title match, where they outlasted Memorial by 23-25, 25-14 and 15-12 scores.
Alvin, who rallied from a 11-9 deficit in the third set against Memorial, was led by Garza’s 15 kills and 10 digs for a double double, Singleton’s 12 kills and four blocks, Wright’s 26 assists and nine digs, Strban’s seven kills and eight digs, Coryn Breaux’s four aces and 10 digs and 10 digs by Anderson.
“It was a great way to start the season,” Lady Yellowjackets’ head coach Kylie Kunefke said following the Texas City match. “You get to see all the little things we need to work on. I wanted us to come out aggressively like we did in all our scrimmages and we did that.
“We served aggressively and had a lot of aces tonight. Being the first game of the season, we were a little hesitant defensively about who was going to take what ball. But we’re going to keep working on that. This is a good group. They came out ready to work.
“The communication they’re having is hey these are the things we need to work on.”
The Lady Jackets wasted no time breaking open a 2-2 stalemate in the first game with a tip by Garza, Wright’s ace and Singleton’s kill igniting a 7-0 run. Strban also planted three shots to the floor and Anderson delivered back-to-back aces to stretch Alvin’s lead to a commanding 21-7 edge.
Alvin then jumped out in the second game with an 8-0 run, behind four Garza kills, senior Breaux’s ace and a double block by Garza and Singleton at the net. The Lady Stings got as close as 13-7, but kills by Strban and Singleton put the issue out of reach.
