After initially watching a five-run lead slip away, the playoff bound Alvin Lady Yellowjackets immediately stormed back with their own five-run uprising to top Friendswood 10-5 to capture their second straight outright 24-6A softball crown Friday night in Friendswood.

The Lady Yellowjackets (24-7-1 overall, 12-2 in district) will meet 23-6A fourth seed George Ranch in the 6A bi-district playoffs later this week at a site and time to be determined.

Carrying a 5-0 lead entering the bottom of the sixth inning, Alvin appeared to have both the game and league title in hand, only to watch the Lady Mustangs strike with the tying five spot. Bayleigh Lay suppled the big blow for Friendswood with a two-run triple to right field, which tied the contest at 5.

However, Alvin regained the upper hand for good in the top of the seventh, tagging Lady Mustangs’ starter Haven Franks and two Friendswood relievers for five runs. MacKenzie Savage singled in Avery Hearn with the go-ahead tally, while Jodie Aguirre and Grace Coffelt drew back-to-back bases loaded walks and Shae Montemayor drove in a pair of runners with a single to left field.

Lady Jackets’ senior hurler Rachel Hertenberger (9 K’s, 6 hits, 1BB) struck out Lauren Adams with two Friendswood runners aboard in the frame’s bottom half to pick up her 24th win in the circle, tying Amber Anderson (2007) for the most victories by an Alvin pitcher in a single season. Hertenberger became the first Alvin pitcher to break the 300 K barrier in her last start against Clear Brook here April 17.
