Mackenzie Savage delivered a walk-off RBI single in the bottom of the seventh inning to lift the Alvin Yellowjackets to a 1-0 triumph over Clear Creek in 24-6A softball action here Friday night.

The victory kept the Lady Jackets (20-7-1, 8-2 in district) in a first-place tie with Clear Springs and avenged an earlier loss to Creek, while the Lady Wildcats were handed their third straight loss and fell into a second-place deadlock with Clear Falls.

Senior hurler Rachel Hertenberger, who broke her own Alvin strikeout record for a single season April 3 at Springs, picked up the win in the circle, striking out 10 and allowing three hits and five walks.

Creek’s Megan Lee surrendered four hits and one walk, while fanning 12 in taking the hard luck loss.

Both pitchers worked their way out of a pair of scoring jams by the opposition.

Lee left a Lady Jacket runner stranded at third base in the first inning and thwarted a one-out bases loaded situation in the fourth.

The Lady Wildcats twice loaded the bases on Hertenberger with the last situation taking place with no outs in the top of the seventh.

However, the right-hander bore down to coax a 5-2 fielder’s choice force play at the plate and a pop fly back to the circle, before whiffing Lee to end the threat.

Khori Bolton then led off the frame’s bottom half for Alvin with a single to right field and was bunted over to second base by Jodie Aguirre.

Lee fanned Grace Coffelt for the second out, but Savage worked the count full and dumped the game-winning single to left field to bring home Bolton.

The Lady Jackets next host Dickinson Tuesday at 6:30 p.m.

Alvin won the teams' last meeting by a 6-3 count March 12 in Dickinson.
