Alvin Yellowjackets’ defensive back Marques Caldwell and Manvel Mavericks’ defensive lineman Kori Roberson were both named to the Houston Touchdown Club’s 2018 UIL High School Preseason Football Team during the organization’s annual luncheon Aug. 15 at the Houston JW Marriott.

Along with the preseason team being announced, FOX-TV NFL analyst and pro football hall of famer Terry Bradshaw was honored as the 2018 Touchdown Club of Houston “Touchdowner of the Year.”

Other NFL greats who attended the event included Joe “Mean Joe” Greene, Kenny Houston, Norm Bulaich, Jerry Levias and Don Trull.

Caldwell (6-2, 190, 4.5 seconds in the 40-yard dash), who led the Jackets in 2017 with two interceptions (one of which was returned for a touchdown last season), also provided 27 tackles. Roberson delivered 47 tackles and six sacks last season for the state finalist Mavs.

Manvel kicks off the 2018 area high school football season by hosting Clear Lake in the new AISD Heritage Complex’s Freedom Field, Thursday at 7 p.m. Alvin then opens its season Friday at home against Stratford at 7 p.m., while Shadow Creek plays its inaugural game Friday at Freedom Field against Summer Creek at 7 p.m.

The weekend also marks the head coaching debut for both Kevin Hall at Manvel and Buddy Hardin at Alvin.

“We got a lot of reps, we got a lot of young kids in and held some kids out, because of a few bumps and bruises. We didn’t want to take a chance,” Hall said. “We played and played fast and played physical. We also screwed up quite a bit. That’s just the inexperience and youthfulness part of this football team.

“But they messed up full speed, so we can fix that.”

Playing their first game since the heartbreaking state championship defeat to Highland Park, the Mavs will be facing a Lake squad, which advanced to the 6A Division II area finals last season and returns 35 lettermen under Larry McRae, a former Manvel assistant coach under Kirk Martin.

Falcons’ quarterback Shae Suiaunoa accounted for 2,513 total yards and 25 touchdowns in 2017, while running back Brendon Holmes rushed for 1,050 yards and 17 TD’s.

“They (Lake) are a tremendous football team,” Hall said. “Coach McRae has done a great job there. He’s been there two years. He’s got... Click here to read full article
