The Alvin Yellowjackets erupted for a 25-12 run in the fourth quarter, which paved for a 59-47 triumph over Clear Falls to pick up their first victory in 24-6A boys’ basketball play Friday night at the AHS Competition Gym.

Alvin (9-18) also avenged a 49-47 overtime defeat to the Knights last month, as Caleb Elsey pumped in a game-high 23 points and Sam Bell added 17 points.

“The guys just did a better job of handling the press and turnovers from the last game we played them,” Alvin head coach John Oliverio said. “The press has been our Achilles heel all season.

“But we felt like we had a good game plan and were not taking as many three (point shots). Sam did a good job of driving to the hoop. Caleb also had a good game and has been our most consistent player, who leads the district in double doubles. Clear Falls came out with more energy during the second half, but our guys were real resilient.

“Travis Phelps hit a big three for us late in the game, which stretched the lead to nine points.”

Alvin girls 37 Clear Falls 46 - With fourth place Clear Creek falling at home to Clear Lake, the Lady Yellowjackets (13-15 overall, 4-5) remained a half game back of the final playoff seed in the 24-6A girls’ hoop standings despite dropping this contest against Falls Friday night in League City.

Alvin trailed only 22-21 at the break, but the Lady Knights outscored the Lady Jackets by a 12-5 margin in the third quarter to increase their lead to 34-26 into the fourth.

Alvin next hosts Clear Springs on Tuesday at 7 p.m.
