The Alvin Lady Yellowjackets moved into a tie for the fourth and final girls’ basketball playoff seed in 24-6A with a 44-39 victory over Clear Brook Friday night in Friendswood.

Alvin (14-16 overall, 5-6 in district) trailed 22-19 at halftime and 35-32 after three periods, but outscored the Lady Wolverines by a 12-4 margin during the final eight minutes to come away with the crucial win.

Clear Creek, who led the Lady Jackets by a game entering the evening, fell to Clear Falls 46- 41 to create the current stalemate scenario. Alvin can clinch the fourth spot outright with a Tuesday win at home against Dickinson (7 p.m. tip-off) in the regular season finale, along with a Lady Wildcats’ loss in League City to Clear Springs on Tuesday.

Springs clinched the 24-6A title with a 58-46 triumph over Clear Lake on Friday, leaving the door open for Lady Chargers’ head coach Pam Crawford to possibly rest some of her starters in Tuesday’s match-up at Creek.

Nevertheless, the Lady Jackets now control their own destiny, thanks to 12 points apiece by senior forward Tashayla Foster and senior guard Andrea Mancha. Sophomore guard Emma Robles pumped in double figures, as well, with 10 points and freshman guard Mercedes Mancha added nine points.

Foster, who delivered a team-leading six rebounds, also provided a clutch offensive rebound bucket off a missed free throw by an Alvin teammate late in the contest to help seal the victory, Lady Jackets’ head coach Justin Walker said.

“This was a huge win for us on the road, because Clear Brook is always a tough place to play,” Walker added. “Everyone in this district is tough. It wasn’t easy. Brook jumped out there good. We kind of tweaked some things in our offense with spacing and trying to open up some more driving lanes.

“Andreea and Mercedes did a good job of keeping space and attacking. Tashayla also had one of her best games with 12 points and was the recipient of a lot of passes down low.”
