Tim Teykl, who compiled 160 victories during an impressive 26-year run at Rosenberg Terry, was unanimously approved by a 6-0 vote as the new assistant athletic director/head football coach at Alvin High School during the AISD’s workshop meeting on April 3.

Teykl, 63, had served as the director of high school relations for Cougars’ football during the last two years at the University of Houston. After showing his gratitude at being approved, Teykl’s unmistakable enthusiasm even had one of the board members proclaiming that “she wanted to play football.”

“I’m grasping for something to put on a wristband,” Teykl told the board and audience members. “Everybody is going wear one. The custodian, who will be my boss and secretaries. It’s going to be the letters w h e n.

“We’re going to learn these letters - when you learn to work, when you learn to have fun, when you learn to capture your self esteem, when you learn to have passion, then you will learn when it’s time to put yourself in a position to be successful. It’s true in the classroom, the community with your wife, football, volleyball and basketball. That’s going to be the when we consume ourselves with.”

Teykl has compiled a lofty 160-112-1 career mark, guiding the Rangers to the playoffs 16 times and also coaching over 120 THSCA Academic All-State players. The 1978 Texas A&M graduate is well aware of the challenge awaiting him with Alvin finishing winless in all 10 games last season.

“I have always had a respect for the kids here,” Teykl said. “They’ve lost their steel and we’re going to put it back in. It’s not their fault. We got to stop brooding and pouting and they will.

"They got to be loved first to give them some self worth. When you believe in yourself, the world is your oyster.

“We’re going to stay here. I’m anxious to reconnect with coaches in this part of Houston, as opposed to the Fort Bend County side, because I know them all.”

Teykl also said that one of his main reasons for coming to Alvin “was the people.”

His Terry teams played several non-district games against Alvin over the years and he also came with the Ranger track and field teams to Yellowjacket meets at AISD Memorial Stadium on numerous occasions, as well.

“Some of my favorite kids I recruited from college were from here, Tommy Sharp and John Eixman,” he said. “I’ve known this place since Gary Keithley. I love the stadium right outside the office. I love the principal and the people here.

“(Athletic director) Mike Bass also coached the offensive line for me at the Bayou Bowl. They’re just all good people and I want to be around good people.”

While running the split back veer successfully at Terry for over two decades, Teykl hasn’t decided yet whether the offensive system will be installed in Alvin.

“I can’t speak to that honestly right now. We will see and study it,” he said. “We got to look at the kids. What they’re used to doing and what they’re comparable to doing. I always believed from the run and shoot, to the I (formation), to the veer to the wishbone, that we got to do what we believe the kids can do and what we will have them doing all the way down to the junior high level.

"We got to do something uncommon that these guys around here don’t... Click here to read full article
