Alvin swept the individual awards and also landed a league-best seven players on the first team.
Freshman catcher Victoria Valdez earned newcomer of the year accolades, while David McCorkle collected the coach of the year award for the third straight year. Aguirre’s getting tabbed as the MVP by the district coaches also marked the third straight year for an Alvin pitcher to receive the honor.
Aguirre delivered an incredible 33-7 record in the circle with 344 strikeouts, which not only broke both the Alvin victory and K school records, the landmarks also ranked among the state’s and nation’s best pitchers.
The 33 wins currently tops all Texas high school pitchers and also stands second nationwide, while the 344 strikeouts rank second in the state and 10th among national prep hurlers.
“Jodie has obviously been a blessing for us. She has been waiting in the shadows behind Rachel (Hertenberger),” McCorkle said. “She’s a perfect example of what we want in our program. There are kids who aren’t necessarily starting right now, but they’re ready.”
Valdez also shined in her freshman season, batting .348 with 24 RBI’s and 12 doubles, while also having a perfect 1.000 fielding percentage behind the plate to rank among the state and nation’s best catchers.
The Alvin battery mates Aguirre and Valdez were joined on the first team by junior third baseman Mary Pourcio, senior shortstop Clarissa Barron, Mindy Matthews (freshmen) and Shae Montemayor (junior) in the outfield and senior first baseman Grace Coffelt with an at-large selection.
Pourcio hit .349 with 24 RBI’s, 29 runs scored, five doubles and four triples, while Barron provided a .443 average with 28 RBI’s, 34 runs scored, three home runs, 11 doubles and five triples.
Matthews and Montemayor also provided plenty of pop atop the Lady Jackets’ lineup with the outfield duo battering the opposition at .407 and .340 respective clips and Matthews also swiping a team-leading 25 bases in 27 attempts.
Coffelt ranked among the team leaders, as well, with 27 RBI’s, 20 runs scored and seven doubles.
Freshman Chloe Foster was also named to the second team outfield for the Lady Jackets and sophomore Khori Bolton gained honorable mention status at second base.
Foster drove in 15 runs to complement 20 runs scored, five doubles and three triples, while Bolton added 14 RBI’s, 15 runs scored, eight doubles and two triples.
Alvin went 33-7 overall and after winning the 24-6A crown with a perfect 12-0 mark, the Lady Jackets posted playoff series sweeps over Brazoswood, Pasadena Memorial and Dobie.
While falling to Katy in the region semifinals, Alvin also played the Lady Tigers in back-to-back tighter contests than Kalum Haack’s squad experienced during the Class 6A playoffs against other Houston area squads entering last weekend’s state tournament in Austin.
Other first team selections included pitcher Megan Lee (Clear Creek); first baseman CeCe Huff (Clear Creek); shortstops Demi Elder (Clear Springs), Erica Riley (Clear Falls) and Brianna Aranzetta (Clear Creek); outfielders Ava Edwards (Clear Creek) and Pam Richardson (Clear Creek); at-large pick Kelly Baker (Clear Springs); and utility player Adri Aranzetta (Clear Creek).
